Matthew Stafford or Mark Sanchez: Who Is the Better Fantasy Player in 2010?
The two big-name rookie quarterbacks from 2009 were New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez and Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford.
Sanchez was the fifth pick in the 2009 NFL draft and led the New York Jets to the AFC Championship Game behind a defense and running game that ranked No. 1 in the NFL.
Stafford was the first overall pick and played with a struggling Lions defense that finished 2-14 and has the second pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
Every season, a group of players comes into Spring Training after poor performances the year before, whether due to injury or simply pathetic play.
In some cases, these athletes found themselves missing the entire year before; in others, they could not find their usual power stroke or consistent out pitch.
We run down five names that fit into this category, and with them are the reasons why they could very well have a bounce-back Fantasy Baseball 2010 campaign.
I take an extremely conservative view of player movement. It’s just my nature to prefer to deal with the known rather than the unknown.
Lost in the rush for the top-level unrestricted free agents, however, is news of the tenders placed on the numerous restricted free agents (RFA) in this uncapped year.
When examining the list, there are several top Individual Defensive Players (IDPs) who come with price tags that might be tempting to other teams.
Da Bears! It has been a while since the Windy City has had any swagger when it comes to their football team; they have not made the playoffs since their 2006 Super Bowl appearance.
Things may begin improving with the opening of free agency and the Bears making a few big moves.
Arizona Cardinals QB Matt Leinart came into the NFL with a lot of promise. In three years as the USC Trojans' starter, he had a record of 37-2. He threw for 10,693 yards and 99 touchdowns with just 23 interceptions.
That résumé earned him the 10th pick in the 2006 draft and the promise of being a star quarterback for the Cardinals.
The second week of free agency in the NFL is under way. Since writing my first article about free agent signings, there has been some more major signings and developments.
Will LaDainian Tomlinson and Adrian Peterson share the same backfield in Minnesota soon?
Here is a look around the league and my thoughts on the latest signings and trades:
March update: Stud Defensive Linemen win Championships. Since there are so few reliable Fantasy Football DLs, having one or two gives you an edge over your competition. It makes sense to reach a bit in your draft to make sure you get one, and when you do, you hang onto him for dear life.
In a typical IDP league, there are no more than 40 Defensive Linemen on rosters, generally three per team. If possible, acquire at least one player from Tier 1 and use your other spots for another solid veteran and a Tier 3 prospect.
After having a breakout year in 2004, where he posted career highs in home runs, RBI, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage, Adrian Beltre was on the verge of stardom. He signed with the Seattle Mariners as a free agent yet did not live up to expectations.
Now that we’ve covered the RB factory that is the NY Giants, who is left worth watching in the NFC? We’re talking about deep sleepers here—guys who almost certainly aren’t on fantasy football rosters yet.
All five of these backs were rookies last year, but only one was drafted, and that in the seventh round. One didn’t even spend his rookie year in the NFL. Yet each has the talent and opportunity to make the other 31 teams in the league regret overlooking him in 2010.
